Last bank holiday we hopped on the train to Bristol and joined the crowds for one of the biggest line-ups of the weekend. We arrived with great anticipation and excitement to check out what they had in store for their biggest outdoor party to date. We entered to the sounds of Alex Bowman playing out to a sea of ravers in the Container Yard, a wide courtyard style area that also hosted a number of food retailers and bars. The party was in full swing and spirits were high, particularly with the sun beaming down on the crowd who were enjoying Bowman’s selected cuts. The indoor club space was also open and served as a cut through to the other two outdoor areas. It was great to get a feel for what Motion looks like on a regular night and to get a taste of the intimate and underground feel of the inner sanctions of this industrial space. Within here there was also an LED light installation complimented with ambient sets from a number of DJs on the lineup.
It was certainly a great place to lie down and take a party break. Located on the other side of the club was the Crane Yard, a long narrow space that created a very intimate and packed dancefloor where we caught sets from Daniel Avery & Midland. Exploring further, we found the Lock Yard; another intimate space that was located down by the river. The vibes were chilled here and so we enjoyed a chance to dance and chat to the crowd who had come far and wide for this momentous party. Recharged, we headed back out to the Container Yard to catch Seth Troxler delivering his usual blend of house and techno to a packed out crowd.

With the audience’s full attention he built up the momentum and energy of the night before handing over to the main attraction – techno god Jeff Mills. The sun had set and the crowd was ready for to propel themselves into the night. Mills delivered, even dishing out some techno classics from his own back catalogue to which the clubbers went wild. Energy levels were high and Mills certainly stepped things up to the next level as he blasted out some hefty techno cuts. Not to miss out on anything, we slipped off to catch the last half hour of Eats Everything’s set over in the Crane Yard where we bustled through the crowd to catch the Bristolian in full swing. This space was really fun; the intimacy and packed out space meant this felt like a proper rave.
The night came to a close at 10pm, but having been treated to a day of dancing to some of techno’s finest we left with a huge grin on our faces and with the intention to return to Bristol again very soon.
